If you have a body, yoga

  • From the word yug…..

The word yoga, rooted in the word ‘yug’ meaning to yoke or to bind, symbolises the potental for a deep connection to our sense of self, a journey inward to find out who we really are beyond the limitations of the physical body and the human condition

The yoga practice is a toolkit for life, offering us myriad ways to break free from the surface stuff and seek liberation from that which binds us.

  • Community

Through our yoga practice we can find ourselves making new friends and having a fresh experience of the world. As we grow in ourselves we start to resonate at a higher vibration and call in our soul community or ‘soul pod’ as I like to think of it, and through these new connections we can all walk each other home.

Yoga to me is about giving back. It is about taking our practice off the mat and into the world, be that through charity, advocacy, litterpicking or offering a friendly smile to a stranger. There are so many ways that we can share our good vibes into the world and sweeten this life for everyone experiencing it.

I am really lucky to have the space in my studio for yoga as well as tattooing. My classes are intimate with a maximum of seven students.

  • Asana

The postures, shapes, movements and alignments that are probably the face of yoga in this western world. Through asana we find space, strengthen, realign and lubricate the body into a state of more freedom and confidence. It teaches us to pay attention to the sensations of the body from the inside out and how we can work to balance and recalibrate ourselves in every moment. We build a deeper state of awareness of not just the shapes on a superficial level, but the functions of the body underneath the skin and we gradually begin to figure out how to honour this incredible vehicle that we have been gifted for this life journey.

Asana alone is a valuable practice and through it we get stronger, improve our health on so many levels, get longer and taller and heal ourselves from injury and stagnation.

You may just choose yoga for this reason, but I think of asana as a gateway drug, leading us into the deeper layers of the practice as a whole.

  • Ahimsa

    Non harming.

Non violence in thought, word and deed.

Ahimsa in my opinion is the backbone of yoga. We can do all the asana we like but if we are not practicing ahimsa is it just all gymnastics and not truly yoga at it’s truth?

Animal rights and advocacy is a huge part of my yoga practice. Animals are here with us and not for us, they are beings with souls, family connection, emotions, and the ability to feel fear, pain and suffering. I believe that to truly heal this world we can’t ignore the atrocities that are happening within animal agriculture and environmental collapse to our animal friends that all deserve a right to a life that is as joyful as we would like ours to be. As we damage our ecosystems through our separation from nature we are losing our home, this beautiful planet that has offered us so much. It is time to halt and reverse the damage we have done or we won’t be here much longer. This can start on your plate. Veganism became a part of my life as I learned through my yoga teacher training about the oneness of all beings and our deep connection to the earth. Veganism is yoga and yoga is vegan.

  • Pranayama

Breath is life. In pranayama we utilise a number of breathwork techniques to energise, strengthen, purify, and balance the systems, energetically, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Pranayama is something that anyone can practice and can be fully tailored to suit your individual needs even as they vary day to day.

Breathwork has changed my life and I am so passionate to share this work with others.

As times get more unsettling and the environment more polluted it is essential to take care of ourselves in this way and to start to cultivate some discipline in a busy and distracted world. Pranayama is perfect for setting us up to drop into meditation, so if this is something you have always wanted to learn, but struggled with, then perhaps this could be something that could help you greatly.
